A Friendly Heads-Up About Coverage Amounts

The coverage details on this page are based on publicly available information from the provider's own website. Your actual coverage may be different depending on your specific plan, your employer's selections, and when your benefit period resets.

We always recommend checking with your provider directly to confirm your exact coverage — and the easiest way is usually through their app or online portal, where you can see your remaining benefits instantly.

One more thing: we are not able to verify your insurance over the phone or by email. To check your coverage, you will need to visit us in store — we can look everything up for you right at the counter. It only takes a minute, and there is never any obligation.

Alberta Government Vision Programs

The Government of Alberta offers vision care benefits through two main programs: AISH and Income Support (Alberta Works). Both cover eye exams and prescription glasses at no cost to eligible recipients. At Charm Optical, we are registered to bill both programs directly — just bring your benefits card and we handle everything.

AISH — Assured Income for the Severely Handicapped

AISH has been supporting Albertans with permanent disabilities since 1979 — it was the first program of its kind in Canada. Created specifically for adults whose medical conditions permanently prevent them from earning a living, the program provides both a monthly living allowance and health benefits including vision care.

AISH is administered by Alberta Community and Social Services, and benefits extend to the recipient, their spouse or partner, and dependent children. Approximately 79,000 Albertans currently receive AISH.

AISH Vision Coverage

Service Coverage Frequency
Eye Exam (Adults) Fully covered Once every 2 years
Prescription Glasses (Adults) Fully covered (government fee schedule) One pair every 2 years
Dependents (Under 18) Eye exam + glasses Annually
Contact Lenses Covered when medically required Prior approval needed
Eyeglass Repairs Covered under specific circumstances As needed

Children under 19 and seniors 65+ also have provincial coverage for eye exams, so AISH does not duplicate that — but it does cover glasses.

What to Bring (AISH)

Bring your AISH benefits card when you visit. We verify your coverage before we begin. If you need contact lenses for medical reasons, we can help submit the prior approval request.

AISH questions? Call Alberta Supports at 1-877-644-9992 (Monday–Friday, 7:30am–8pm).

Alberta Works — Income Support

Alberta Works Income Support helps individuals and families cover basic living expenses while they work toward greater independence. The program has two streams: Expected to Work (for those actively seeking employment) and Barriers to Full Employment (for those with conditions limiting full-time work). Both streams include health benefits — including vision care — at no cost.

Approximately 98,000 Albertans currently receive Income Support. When approved, you automatically receive a health benefits card.

Alberta Works Vision Coverage

Service Coverage Frequency
Eye Exam (Adults) Fully covered Once every 2 years
Prescription Glasses (Adults) Fully covered (government fee schedule) One pair every 2 years
Dependents (Under 18) Glasses covered Annually
19-Year-Old Dependents One routine eye exam Per year
Anti-Reflective Coating Included at no extra charge With glasses
Progressive Lenses Available if multifocals needed With glasses

If your situation falls outside the standard coverage, your provider can submit a Request for Optical Services form through the Health Benefits Exception Committee for review.

Still Covered After Leaving Income Support?

If you have recently started working and left Income Support, you may still qualify for the Alberta Adult Health Benefit (AAHB) — a transitional program that keeps your vision coverage active so you do not lose benefits the moment you find work. Ask us about it when you visit.

Alberta Works questions? Call Alberta Supports at 1-877-644-9992 (Monday–Friday, 7:30am–8pm).

How We Bill Both Programs

Charm Optical is registered to bill both AISH and Alberta Works directly. The process is the same for both:

  1. Bring your benefits card (AISH or Alberta Works)
  2. We check your eligibility and confirm what is covered
  3. We submit the claim on your behalf — no upfront payment, no paperwork
  4. You walk out with your glasses at no cost (within covered services)

If you want to upgrade beyond the covered amount (premium frames, for example), we will always let you know the difference before you commit — no surprises.
