A Friendly Heads-Up About Coverage Amounts
The coverage details on this page are based on publicly available information from the provider's own website. Your actual coverage may be different depending on your specific plan, your employer's selections, and when your benefit period resets.
We always recommend checking with your provider directly to confirm your exact coverage — and the easiest way is usually through their app or online portal, where you can see your remaining benefits instantly.
One more thing: we are not able to verify your insurance over the phone or by email. To check your coverage, you will need to visit us in store — we can look everything up for you right at the counter. It only takes a minute, and there is never any obligation.
RCMP Vision Benefits in Edmonton
If you are an active RCMP member, a reservist, or a dependent of a serving member, your vision care is covered through the Supplemental Health Care (SHC) program at no premium cost to you. RCMP vision benefits fall under Program of Choice 14 (POC 14) and are administered by Medavie Blue Cross on behalf of the RCMP.
The Royal Canadian Mounted Police has been serving Canadians since 1873, originally as the North-West Mounted Police. Today, approximately 20,000 active regular and special constable members (represented by the National Police Federation) receive comprehensive health benefits — and Charm Optical in South Edmonton is proud to serve those who serve our community.
What POC 14 Covers
Program of Choice 14 — Vision (Eye) Care — covers the following for eligible RCMP members and their dependents:
- Eye examinations — comprehensive exams with a licensed optometrist
- Prescription lenses — single vision, bifocal, or progressive
- Frames — covered up to the benefit grid amount
- Contact lenses — when prescribed
- Low vision aids — when prescribed by an approved professional
- Accessories — as specified in the RCMP benefit grid
Coverage amounts and frequencies are set by the RCMP benefit grid, which you can access through the Medavie Blue Cross member portal. The RCMP independently sets the fees for their vision care benefits, and providers (like us) are permitted to balance bill if your selection exceeds the covered amount — but we will always tell you the difference before proceeding.
Retired and former RCMP members may receive vision benefits through Veterans Affairs Canada (POC 14) instead — see our Veterans Affairs page for details.
Check Your Benefits Before You Visit
Sign in to the Medavie Blue Cross member portal at medavie.bluecross.ca to view your RCMP benefit grid, check your remaining vision balance, and see your claims history. You can also download the Medavie Blue Cross app to check from your phone.
For benefit questions, contact Medavie Blue Cross member services or your RCMP benefits coordinator.
Joining the RCMP? We Do the Enrollment Eye Exam
If you are applying to become an RCMP officer, you need a Vision Examination of Applicant (Form RCMP 2180) completed by a licensed Canadian optometrist. This is a required part of your application — and we do it right here at Charm Optical.
The exam covers corrected and uncorrected visual acuity, field of vision, and colour vision testing — all standard requirements for RCMP applicants.
The cost of the enrollment vision exam is the applicant's responsibility (not reimbursed by the RCMP), and results are valid for 2 years. Just bring the RCMP 2180 form with you — or let us know when you book and we will have it ready.
