3 Reasons Your Progressives Fail at the Computer — and the Fix

Your progressives are not faulty. A general-purpose progressive puts the intermediate zone in a narrow corridor low in the lens, so a 24-inch monitor sits mostly in blur. You tip your chin up about 14 degrees to find the clear band, and you hold it all day. The fix is a lens design, not a blue-light filter.

This is the most common complaint we hear from people in their forties and fifties who work at a desk. The glasses are fine for driving. They are fine for a menu. Then you sit down at work and by three in the afternoon your neck aches and the top three lines of your email are soft.

Below is exactly why that happens, a tool that draws it for your own desk, and the four ways out — compared on working range, head posture and price.

Why do my progressives go blurry at the computer?

Three things stack up. None of them is a defect, and none of them is fixed by a filter.

The intermediate corridor is narrow, and it sits low

A progressive is three prescriptions blended into one lens: distance at the top, reading at the bottom, and a corridor of intermediate power joining them. Your monitor needs that intermediate power. On a general-purpose design the useful part of that corridor sits below the fitting cross — the point marked on the lens that lines up with your pupil — so you reach it by dropping your gaze, not by looking straight ahead. The desk test below models that band as roughly 15 to 26 degrees below straight ahead. That is a stated assumption of the model rather than a measurement of your lens, and it shifts with the design, the add power and the fitting height. Either way, your monitor is not down there. It is in front of you.

Your screen is bigger than the clear band

A 24-inch monitor at 60 cm covers about 26 degrees of your field of view from the top edge to the bottom edge. The intermediate band gives you about 11. There is no head position that puts the whole screen in focus at once — you can have the top or you can have the bottom. Weidling and Jaschinski found the same conflict when they measured real office workers: monitors had to go lower to give people a comfortable head posture, but going lower fought against keeping the whole screen inside the progressive's zone of clear vision (Ergonomics, 2015).

It is a focus problem wearing a glare problem's clothes

Blur, headache and tired eyes at 3 p.m. get blamed on blue light because that is what the internet sells. But a lens that is out of focus at 60 cm is out of focus with or without a filter on it. The 2023 Cochrane systematic review pooled 17 trials and concluded blue-light filtering lenses may not reduce eye strain from computer use in the short term. Fix the focus first. Then decide about the filter on its own merits.

How this is calculated: the screen is a 16:9 panel at the distance and height you set, and gaze angles are measured from the eye's centre of rotation. The clear band for a general-purpose progressive is an assumption of this model, not a published constant — we take it as gaze declinations of roughly 15 to 26 degrees below straight ahead, the stretch of corridor carrying intermediate power on a standard design. What is measured, rather than modelled, is the conflict itself: Weidling and Jaschinski found on real computer users that clear vision through a general-purpose progressive demands a lower gaze angle than a comfortable head posture allows, and that their monitors should have been placed lower still (Ergonomics, 2015). The occupational band runs from the top of the lens down, and covers reading distance out to about 2 m, the working range Bailey Nelson Canada quotes for its office lens. Monitor placement follows CCOHS. This is a model of the geometry, not a measurement of your eyes — your fitting height, add power and corridor length shift every number here, which is why we measure them on your face.

Lowering the monitor is a neck fix. It is not a focus fix. Drag the height slider from 15° to 27° and the chin-up angle falls all the way to zero while the sharp percentage does not move at all. Push past 27° and it starts getting worse.

Which lens actually fixes it?

The market figures in row 3 are other Canadian retailers' listed starting prices, quoted so you have a reference point: Bailey Nelson Canada lists office lenses from $389 for one complete pair, and New Look lists its proximity lenses from $379. Occupational designs are made by Zeiss, Essilor and others in several working ranges — Zeiss publishes three, out to roughly 1 m, 2 m and 4 m. Which one suits you depends on your prescription, your add power and how deep your desk is, so we quote it against your actual prescription rather than guessing. Call us and we will price it.

The cheap experiment first

Before you buy anything, do this. Move your monitor down until the whole screen is below eye level and the top edge sits a good 15 cm under your eyes — on most desks that means taking it off every riser and letting it stand directly on the desktop — then sit an arm's length back. Merely “slightly below” is not enough: park the top edge level with your eyes and the desk test still shows about 15° of chin-up. If the neck ache goes but the blur stays, you have confirmed it is the lens, not the desk — and you now know exactly which of the four options above you need.

Do blue light glasses help computer eye strain?

Probably not on their own, and that is not our opinion — it is the current best evidence. The 2023 Cochrane review pooled 17 randomised trials across six countries and found blue-light filtering spectacle lenses may not reduce eye-strain symptoms from computer use in the short term, and probably make little or no difference to visual acuity. Effects on sleep were inconclusive.

So here is our honest position, as people who sell the coating. A blue-light filter is a comfort preference, not a treatment. If you like how a screen looks through one, buy it — we make blue-cut lenses and single-vision jobs are often ready the same day. But if you buy it hoping it will fix blur, a headache or a stiff neck at a desk, you have bought a filter for a focus problem. That is the single most common wasted purchase we see in this category.

Anti-reflective coating is a different story and worth asking about: it removes the reflections bouncing off the front and back of the lens, which is a real source of screen glare and a genuinely different mechanism from tinting out a slice of the spectrum.

How should I set my monitor up if I wear progressives?

Do this before you spend a dollar. The Canadian Centre for Occupational Health and Safety publishes specific guidance, and one line of it is written for exactly the people reading this page.

One caveat, and it is the reason this post exists: 15° is general ergonomic advice written for everyone, not for someone in general-purpose progressives. Put 15° into the desk test above and you still have about 14° of chin-up left to find the corridor. Weidling and Jaschinski hit the same wall — lowering the monitors did cut musculoskeletal symptoms, but clear vision of the complete monitor was still not achieved, and they concluded the monitor should have been placed even lower. So take the “or slightly lower” half of the CCOHS line seriously, and keep going past it. If you use a laptop all day, the same rules apply and are harder to meet: a laptop screen and keyboard are attached, so one of them is always in the wrong place. An external keyboard and a stand solve it for about the price of a coating.

Why do my progressive lenses go blurry when I look at the computer?

Because the intermediate zone of a general-purpose progressive sits in a narrow corridor low in the lens, not straight ahead where your monitor is. You reach it by dropping your gaze well below the horizontal, which is exactly why the screen looks soft when your head is level. Weidling and Jaschinski measured this on real computer users and reported that clear vision through a general-purpose progressive needs a lower gaze angle than a comfortable head posture gives you, and that the monitors in their study should have been placed lower still. Do I need computer glasses if I already wear progressives?

If you spend more than about two hours a day at a screen, usually yes. Progressives are built as one-pair-for-everything lenses, and the compromise they make is the size of the intermediate zone. A dedicated computer pair — single-vision lenses set to your actual screen distance, or an occupational progressive — puts the whole screen in focus with your head level. If your screen time is light and occasional, lowering the monitor may be enough on its own. Move the monitor first, then decide.

Are blue light glasses worth it for computer eye strain?

The evidence says probably not on their own. The 2023 Cochrane systematic review pooled 17 randomised trials and concluded that blue-light filtering spectacle lenses may not reduce eye-strain symptoms from computer use in the short term, and probably make little or no difference to visual acuity. If you like how a screen looks through a blue filter, it is a reasonable comfort choice. But blur, headaches and neck ache at a desk are usually a focus and posture problem, and a filter does not change where your lens is in focus.

How high should my monitor be if I wear progressives?

Lower than you probably have it. CCOHS recommends the screen centre sit about 15 degrees below the horizontal or slightly lower, and notes that a monitor which is too high is worse than one slightly too low. It also says specifically that people who wear bifocals, trifocals or progressive lenses may find the top of the monitor more comfortable slightly below eye level, because the lower part of the lens is used for close vision, so lowering the monitor reduces head tilt. Take the monitor off any riser or stack of books and try it.

What is the difference between computer glasses and reading glasses?

The distance they are built for. Reading glasses are focused for about 33 to 50 cm — a book, a phone, paperwork on the desk. A monitor usually sits between 50 and 75 cm away, which is further than reading and closer than distance. Wearing reading glasses at a monitor makes you lean in to reach their focal distance, which is how a lens problem turns into a neck problem. Can I use one pair of glasses for both driving and the computer?

You can, but that is exactly the compromise that brought you here. A general-purpose progressive is the only design that covers both, and it does it by giving the screen a narrow corridor rather than the full lens. Occupational and single-vision computer lenses fix the screen by removing distance vision, so they are not safe to drive in. If you want one pair for everything, keep the progressive and lower the monitor. If you want the screen genuinely sharp, you need a second pair — there is no lens that avoids the trade-off.
