Where to Get an Eye Exam in South Edmonton: Neighbourhood Guide

Charm Optical is at 5035 Ellerslie Road SW in south Edmonton. A comprehensive adult eye exam is $99 when AHCIP does not cover you, and every exam is by appointment. All 19 south-side communities we serve sit inside a 25-minute drive: Summerside 6 minutes, Mill Woods 8, Twin Brooks 14, Windermere 19.

Those minutes are measured, not guessed. Every distance, drive time and road name in this guide was pulled on 24 July 2026 from the OSRM routing engine running on OpenStreetMap road data, routed from each community’s centre point to our door. They are free-flow times — no rush hour, no construction, no school zones. Treat them as a floor.

Measuring all 19 turned up something more useful than a list of numbers. Eighteen of them, spread across 25 km of the south side, arrive here on exactly three roads. The nineteenth is Walker — the neighbourhood the store sits in, 1.2 km away on local streets.

Where exactly is Charm Optical in south Edmonton?

We are at 5035 Ellerslie Road SW, in the Harvest Pointe area of the Walker neighbourhood, at the southern edge of the city. The address sits where Ellerslie Road SW crosses 50 Street. That single intersection is why a store on the far south side is reachable from Windermere and from The Meadows in roughly the same amount of time.

Three roads carry almost all of it:

• Ellerslie Road SW is the east–west spine of the far south. It runs from the Heritage Valley communities in the west to the QEII interchange in the east, and it passes our front door.
• 50 Street is the north–south line: north into Mill Woods, south to Beaumont.
• Anthony Henday Drive rings the west and south of Edmonton and drops traffic onto Ellerslie Road. It is how the far west side gets here without a single set of lights.

How far is Charm Optical from my neighbourhood?

All 19 communities, measured

The same data as a table, sorted by distance. “Main roads” are the two longest named road segments on the measured route, named exactly as the router named them and printed in the order you drive them. Short connector streets and unnamed ramps drop out, which is why a few rows start on a street you would not have guessed.

Two numbers are worth pausing on. Rutherford is 9.0 km but 15 minutes — longer than Allard, which is further away, because the Rutherford route stays on signal-controlled city streets the whole way. Sherwood Park is 19.0 km and 21 minutes, barely slower than Chappelle at 15.7 km, because almost all of it is ring road. Distance is a poor proxy for time on the south side. The road class is what matters.

Which three roads does almost everyone arrive on?

Nineteen routes. Eighteen of them give three answers, and the nineteenth never leaves the block.

Ellerslie Road SW — 11 of 19 communities

Ellerslie Road SW is the spine. Summerside, Ellerslie, Blackmud Creek, Cavanagh, The Meadows, Heritage Valley, Callaghan, Rutherford, Allard, Nisku and Leduc all finish their trip on it. If you live anywhere along the south edge of the city, the instruction is the same: get onto Ellerslie Road and head for 50 Street.

The two longest of these are the QEII runs from Nisku and Leduc, which exit the highway onto Ellerslie Road and come straight east.

Twin Brooks, Ambleside, Chappelle, Windermere and Sherwood Park all use the ring road. This is the group where the drive time flatters the distance: Ambleside is 14.8 km but only 16 minutes, and Sherwood Park covers 19.0 km in 21 minutes, because the Henday has no lights.

50 Street — 2 of 19

Mill Woods and Beaumont come straight down or straight up 50 Street. Mill Woods is 4.7 km due north, and the router spends 3.4 km of that on 50 Street NW alone. Beaumont is 8.7 km due south, and the road you leave town on is the road you arrive on.

Walker — the one that needs no corridor

Walker is the neighbourhood the store is in, so it gets its own line rather than being counted under a road it does not use. The measured route from the centre of Walker is 1.2 km of Watt Promenade SW and Watt Boulevard SW and never touches 50 Street, Ellerslie Road or the Henday at all.

Eighteen communities. Twenty-five kilometres of south side. Three roads. If you can find Ellerslie Road, 50 Street or the Henday, you can find us.

What does an eye exam cost in south Edmonton, and who pays?

At Charm Optical a comprehensive adult eye exam is $99 when AHCIP does not cover you. A contact lens exam and fitting is $135, and that is a separate service on top of the eye exam, not a version of it. Those are the only two exam prices we publish.

Whether you pay the $99 at all comes down to your age and your eyes. Alberta Health Care covers some optometry, and the rules are narrower than most people assume.

Eyewear itself is a different budget. AHCIP does not cover glasses or contact lenses at any age — that comes out of a workplace or private plan. We direct bill Alberta Blue Cross, Canada Life (formerly Great-West Life), Desjardins, AISH, Alberta Works and NIHB among others, so in most cases you pay only the balance your plan does not. NIHB requires pre-approval, so tell us before your appointment rather than at the till.

Do I need an appointment, or can I just show up?

Shopping is different. If you already have a valid prescription and just want frames, you are welcome to come in and browse our glasses collection without booking anything.

What to bring to an exam:

• Your current glasses, even the old pair you stopped wearing. It tells us what has changed.
• Your contact lens boxes if you wear lenses — the brand, the base curve and the power are all on the box.
• Your benefits card or plan number, so we can check coverage before anything is ordered.
• A list of any medications you take. Several common ones affect the eyes, and it changes what we look for.
• Your Alberta health card if you are 18 and under or 65 and over, or if you are coming in about a medical eye problem.
